What Becomes of What We Receive?

What happens to the opportunities, knowledge, trust, and experience we receive from others? Perhaps value is not simply what we receive, but what becomes of it after it passes through us. Meaningful work may begin when what we naturally do becomes useful—and valuable—to someone else.

What Becomes of What We Receive?

Someone sent me this photograph.

I kept looking at it.

Perhaps because it reminded me of something I have lived.

There was a time when I was unemployed.

Someone connected me with a person who trusted me with work.

I did not know everything.

I knew enough to begin.

So I began.

The work gave me more than income.

It gave me experience.

Over time, that experience changed what I could do and the kind of work I could take on.

Looking back, I realise that much of what I have today began with something I received from someone else.

An opportunity.

A lesson.

A conversation.

A relationship.

Trust.

None of it remained exactly as I received it.

It passed through me.

It changed me.

And eventually, I could pass something of my own to someone else.

Perhaps value is not simply what we receive, but what becomes of it after it passes through us.

Knowledge can become understanding.

Experience can become judgment.

Trust can become responsibility.

A conversation can become clarity.

An opportunity can become capability.

And capability can become something useful to another person.

I have received much.

I have also given my time and thinking to people without asking for payment.

Not because it had no value.

But because value does not always return to us in the same form, or at the same time.

Sometimes we never see what became of what we gave.

Perhaps that is all right.

What matters is that it became something.

This is how I now want to approach my own work.

Not by asking first what I can sell.

But by asking:

What have I received, what have I learned, and what am I still failing to make useful to someone else?

Perhaps meaningful work is not about finding something to sell.

Perhaps it is about becoming useful enough that something you do naturally becomes valuable to another person.

We receive.

We grow.

We transform.

We give forward.

What can become more valuable because it passed through me?
