The Platform

Some things are designed to be noticed. Others are designed to be useful. They are not always the same things.

Nobody takes photographs of platforms.

At least not intentionally.

The train receives the attention.

The platform receives the train.

One is admired.

The other is expected.

Perhaps that is why the platform interested me.

It spends its entire life helping people arrive somewhere else.

Students.

Workers.

Families.

Pilgrims.

Dreamers.

The platform welcomes them all.

Then watches them leave.

Without asking to be remembered.

The train carries people forward.

The platform makes the journey possible.

Most of us spend our lives being taught to become the train.

Faster.

More impressive.

More noticeable.

Few of us are taught the value of becoming the platform.

Steady enough to support a journey.

Useful enough to help someone move.

Present enough to remain when the excitement has passed.

The train arrives with noise.

The platform remains in silence.

Both are important.

Yet only one seems concerned with being seen.

Reading is enough.
