We often assume that standing beside someone means standing close to them.
I am no longer sure.
Distance is easy to measure.
Direction is not.
Two people can spend years talking without ever looking toward the same horizon.
And two people can stand together in complete silence, quietly sharing something words could never fully describe.
Perhaps that is why the deepest forms of companionship rarely announce themselves.
They are not built through constant conversation.
They grow each time two people find themselves attentive to something larger than either of them.
A sunset.
A prayer.
A shared hope.
A difficult season.
A future neither can see clearly, yet both are willing to face.
Standing beside someone is not simply about occupying the same place.
It is about choosing the same direction.
Sometimes that choice is spoken.
More often, it is simply lived.
And perhaps that is enough.
