We don’t want to understand the perspective of the speaker. We’re in a hurry to reply. We’re eager to present our idea to her without knowing whether she has completed it.
Communication is all about listening. You can be a good orator even if you don’t have the patience to attend, but you can become a great communicator only if you’ve got the habit of listening well.
You probably could have done better because you need to understand more about the subject she was talking about. Your attention was not on her words but on vomiting as soon as possible.
